Super Smash Bros. Melee -> Event 51

The Showdown. It's a brawl between the ultimate evil in three of its Nintendo forms: Bowser, the evil Koopa King from the Mario games; Ganondorf, the King of Evil in the Zelda series; and Mewtwo, the evil form of Mew from the Pokémon franchise. This means we're in for a little trouble :S

Ok, let's analyze:
  • Ganondorf is heavy and slow to retaliate after some of his attacks, so he is constantly open to attacks.
  • When he DOES retaliate, he is quick to doge and leave YOU open to attacks. And Ganondorf himself is, though slow, VERY powerful, hitting up to 30% damage in a single Smash attack thanks to Warlock Magic.

  • Mewtwo is not exactly lightweight, but he floats over the air, making him very prone to being blown back with a Smash attack.
  • His aerial attacks and the Shadow Ball (while charging) make for rapid-hit combos that render you unable to move. Oh, and they are also powered with dark powers so they also deal 30% damage with a Smash attack.

  • Bowser is too slow. Most (if not all) of his attacks are predictable and not hard to avoid/dodge/block/counter, and his size makes him an easy target for projectiles and Smash attacks, but most importantly, aerial attacks.
  • But let's not forget that we're not facing Bowser here. We're facing GIGA Bowser, whose attacks are harder to avoid since, despite being the same, they are really hard to avoid because Bowser now takes up more space in his attacks. Oh, and he also has dark energy to damage 30% with each HIT.
Yep, it's a hard fight. Considering that they all work as a team doesn't help at all. And you have to KO each three times. Shigeru, this is unfair.

The key to this battle is to try to never leave yourself vulnerable, because the other three are looking for open areas where they can start an attack, and Giga Bowser's normal A attacks (or his Firebreath) combined with Mewtwo's rapid-hit normal A attack and topped off with either a Gerudo Dragon or a Dark Dive make for an unpleasant Flawless KO.

Never, ever, EVER use a heavy character. You might think that being heavy means that opponents will have a hard time knocking you off, but the truth is a tad different: when the battle starts, both Mewtwo and Giga Bowser will try to corner you and either force you into their attack range or off the ledge, and heavy characters don't stand a chance when recovering from a ledge fall.

I try to use Capt. Falcon and start with a Falcon Kick that hits Mewtwo and Giga Bowser. Then I proceed to Smash attack Ganondorf until the other two are back into the fray, then I Falcon Kick them away again, and Smash attack them off the ledges. But then the strategy's over and I have to do some spontaneous planning to attack, but it's mostly Smash attacks and the Falcon Kick (NOTE: FALCON PUNCHING IS NEVER RECOMMENDED, FOR IT LEAVES CAPT. FALCON VULNERABLE ONE SECOND BEFORE THE ATTACK. THE SAME APPLIES FOR THE WARLOCK PUNCH, FOR THOSE WHO IGNORED MY HEAVY-CHARACTER-WARNING AND CHOSE GANONDORF)

Good luck. You'll need it :P

Bonus Curiosities

Bonuses. They appear at the end of every 1P match. They appear below your character after a Vs match. The thing is, what do you do with those scores? Do you really record them somewhere? 'Cause i looked around Misc Records on Melee and found nothing on that.

But still, some bonuses are either to good not to achieve or a bit hilarious to flip out. For example, you get a bonus for appearing in a bubble on all four sides of the screen (Lost Luggage) as well as a bonus for having a damage meter like 111% or 222% (Jackpot <= self-explanatory :P)

Super Smash Bros Melee brings in bonuses with the extra detail that whenever you achieve a bonus that is higher than another bonus you had achieved before, the former totally nullifies the latter. Take KO Artist for example. If you have more KO's than the second-place holder, you get 200x the KO's. But if you get KO Master (get twice as many KO's as the second-place holder) you get +2500. Kinda aggravating when you get 20 KO's.

But, there's a catch where you can accumulate these bonuses. You know Luigi's taunt punt? When Luigi taunts, he kicks the ground (and whatever is over the ground at the moment, say, your foes) You get Poser for posing at least 6 times in a minute. You get Poser Power for damaging someone else with the pose. You get Poser KO for KO'ing someone else with a pose (duh!) Some lucky people even get Poser Poseur for posing before another person. Careful, though: if you just punt here and there, you'll end up getting Poser and Stale Moves. Yeah, it happens to me 85% of the time.

My favorite bonuses are the End-of-the-Match bonuses like Fighter Stance (ending the match with a pose) Magnified Finish (ending the match in a bubble) Invisible Finish (ending the match while invisible) Invincible Finish (ending the match under the effects of a star)

Some bonuses are achieved by mere luck. I've got the Mew Catcher only three times on 367 Vs Matches, which is a bit unsettling because the chances of getting a Mew are roughly .4% whereas my experience tells me my chances are .8174%
(O_O)
Some people are stupid enough to waste time on Adventure Mode and get either the Lucky Number Seven (0:07) or the Lucky Threes (3:33) when the real bonuses in the 1P modes rest on the time left and coins gained. The only place I get the Lucky Number Seven in is in the Brinstar escaping stage, although not even there, man, I get the Half-Minute Man.

And the first post is here!! I am the Guy on Shorts, a blogger and special fan of the Super Smash Bros series. Since I am running out of things to unlock in the GCN release, I have decided to open up this guide that will give info, tips, and funny stuff on Smash Bros Melee.

I want to start out with some good tips for unlocking stuff. Regarding the VS. Match accumulation, this is what I do: have your ever seen a rule that says "Handicap" on the Vs Mode? It modifies the advantage (the ability to stay put without flying off the stage: the weight, if you will) one character has over another. Switch yours to 9 and switch your opponent's to 1, lower the stock value to 1, and to spice it up, why not switch the damage ratio up to 2 (equals to 200% attack power) Believe me, it's Sudden Death Mode, only that in here your matches count (Special Melee matches are never recorded)

To rack up play time, you might want to start a 2P game with 1 stock in a stage where absolutely nothing happens (like the Temple or Fountain of Dreams stages) and simply leave it there for the night (or longer if you want Mewtwo SOOO BADLY) you can get 10-13 hours average easy in there. But what if I don't have two controllers, you ask? Well, leave a VS Match on with your Human player on and one CP. Leave it there for the night, it's just the same.

You wan to beat the Classic/Adventure modes to unlock characters, but don't want to waste your energy on the Normal difficulty to get the Master Hand/Giga Bowser trophies by the way? Just wait for the appropriate time. Train yourself through the Very Easy and Easy difficulties, to save time and points. Yeah, it may sound kinda wuss, but Very Easy is not "Baby" easy. And remember, the losses at the hands of the Onett stage Nesses in Adv. Mode will be counted on Misc. Records. EVERYTIME.

Event Matches!! Who hasn't shaken his fists in fury at the unthinkable plot devices used in event matches?! Kill Mr. Falcon in seven seconds!! The last Yoshi Egg is in danger!! Kill Nana, but NOT POPO!! PSI the interplanetary characters to oblivion!! KO two invisible foes!! Destroy the ultimate evils (Giga Bowser, Mewtwo, and Ganondorf) without a scratch!!

Sheesh, I'd prefer to save the hardest ones for when I have enough experience and unlocked most characters (although in some cases like events 29 and 37 we benefit from finishing these on one piece)
